Los Angeles Public Transit

What's public transit like in Los Angeles? Denver in recent years has stepped up its public transit system with the addition of a long stretch of lightrail. The new line runs from the heart of downtown to about 40 miles south of the city. It created an alternative to driving to the busiest business districts just outside of the city. Does L.A. have any public transit like this? If so, where do the train lines run from and to? Is it efficient or just a pain in the ass?

Tim Wheaton:

LA transit SUCKS. SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. they have a very VERY small train or subway system that i guess would work if you lived close to it or worked somewhere along the line of it. but it almost seems it was built primarily with landmark traveling in mind (like the Staples Center). everyone drives in LA and traffic is reeeee-diculous. period.
